Although those new chips are not on Intel ARK at the time of this writing we may speculate they are lower core count parts. We had been told that there would be a new silicon spin to address the issue but that it would be some time until products with the new spin would show up.

One item to remember is that these are meant for embedded appliances, often with long lifecycles. While in consumer parts updating a CPU to a new silicon rev almost four years after its release may not make sense, in the embedded market it is important because many of these products will have long field deployments and service needs.

We expect the new stepping chips to take some time before they reach the channel. At the same time, Denverton is getting closer to a wider-spread launch. We already have benchmarked the low-end Intel Atom C We do hope these are released in greater quantities soon.

Thanks to our great STH forum community for spotting. Does anyone know what the motherboard level workaround consists of? I have some Supermicro C boards which have been shipped to me as advanced replacements of existing boards, apparently to fix the bug, but the motherboards are the same revision as the old ones, contain the same BIOS version as the old ones, and still contain the old B0 stepping CPUs of the old ones.

There is no physical evidence of any changes on the boards. Sign me up for the STH newsletter!

AMI bios, usb, sata ports, boots from sata ssd. And continuing to sell this kit - a call to a sales rep confirmed the sales team did not know of the bug exisitence let alone if it effected their gear. Have a call in witht he retailer of the system.

Will update here if there is any response. I can update the main site with the response. The failure rate on most devices is not high.

The RMA note said "Reported problem not found. While there is a saying that every publicity is good publicity, I somehow doubt that this is the case this time. Intel publishes specification update for many products they produce.

If you thought that a product is complete after the blueprints come off the drawing board then you have been mistaken. Problems and their solutions are detected while the product has been released and new updates to the hardware are built in the later stages of the production. Literally translated: a correction of a published text.

Circuit degradation is a normal part of the life-cycle of a complex semiconductor like a processor. However with modern processors the effect should take a decade or longer, much longer than the expected service lifetime of a chip.

So when something happens to speed up the degradation process, if severe enough it can cut the lifetime of a chip to a fraction of what it was planned for, causing a chip or line of chips to fail while still in active use.

While there were more steppings of that chipset produces, the majority was affected. Cisco is a large company that uses these processors in some of their products.

Product overview. Synology has not currently seen any indication that this issue has caused an increase in failure rates for DiskStation or RackStation models equipped with Intel Atom C series processors compared to other models manufactured in the same time frame not equipped with the affected processors. On their forums there have been topics with a device that seems to fit the sypmtoms of a defect CPU.

Every processor and chipset has some degree of bugs, but these issues rarely become critical flaws that jeopardize a product. Although the Cisco products with this component are currently performing normally, we expect product failures to increase over the years, beginning after the unit has been in operation for approximately 18 months. Once the component has failed, the system will stop functioning, will not boot, and is not recoverable. This component is also used by other companies.

So how does this link back to Intelgiven that Cisco declined to name a vendor? Sharp-eyed boffins at The Register spotted an errata notice Intel issued in January, Implication : If the LPC clock s stop functioning the system will no longer be able to boot. The problem appears to affect all current steppings of the C product family.

While a platform fix has been identified, many manufacturers are choosing to recall products altogether rather than apply it. Cisco has announced that it will proactively replace hardware that was still under warranty or any other type of valid service contract as of November Hardware will be replaced whether it has already failed or not. ServeTheHome did some digging into the situation and found multiple vendors willing to acknowledge being affected by the issue: Cisco, Netgate, QCT, and Supermicro all acknowledged the flaw — but not the cause.

ServeTheHome states that it has spoken to eight separate vendors, none of whom were willing to acknowledge which supplier was responsible.

Multiple vendors cited NDAs with their suppliers that prevented them from identifying the source.

Not many companies have the clout to force multi-billion dollar corporations to kowtow to its desire for secrecy. If you have Avoton or Rangeley hardware deployed for any reason, including as a component in embedded systems or networking hardware, we recommend contacting the vendor to determine whether replacement hardware is required or available.

For those that are not aware of Intel's latest AVR54 errata, it is concerning a bug with the Atom C platform where the system will cease to boot.

This thread is for owners to share their experience and knowledge regarding this bug, especially those who have gone through the Supermicro RMA process. I am approaching the 18 months of operations that has been mentioned as the threshold where the bug may occur. I have not had any issues with the system up to this point. The thought of initiating the RMA process is frightening especially given that Supermicro will be replacing the board with a refurbished product.

I don't know if this problem is a big issue or not, but looks like Intel may have set aside a huge chunk of money in their latest financial report to possibly prepare for the fallout.

Intel launches Atom C2000 revision C0 - fixing AVR54

For those who are currently using a Supermicro Atom C2xxx based board: 1. How long have you been using the board. Have you had any problems?

Do you plan on initiating an RMA with Supermicro? For those that have gone through the Supermicro RMA process: 1. How was your RMA experience? Do yo need to be within the warranty period to be able to initiate an RMA? Any advice on how to fill out the RMA form to ensure a smooth process?

How is the replacement board working out? How long have you been using the board? I'm not overly concerned anyways. Already did. Cross-shipped, worked great 2. Apparently not, see above 3.

Sucks it took so long and so much damage has been caused to companies and businesses Hopefully this inspires them to do some additional testing before releasing the C CPUs TJ Ferdon New Member.

Yes, my password is: Forgot your password?Several STH readers will notice that we had downtime last evening. It sucks. Almost everything is back up, and performing well. This happened. We are in the same data center suite for now as Linode, Android Police and etc.

Last evening, the power to the suite was cut. We do not have official word on what happened, but it took a few hours to resolve. When this suite goes down we are not the only ones impacted:. The outage covered well over an hour, so this is not something that one can realistically fix with in-rack battery backups. Normally, once power resumes, we are back online within minutes while everything boots.

This time was different. There were three additional failures that we found after the power came back on. After we got confirmation that power was back on, and Linode and others who have larger support teams and status pages, were online, we realized something was wrong.

STH was still down. As power was restored we actually had three failures to deal with:. It took about 30 minutes to design and build an emergency firewall appliance and get software loaded then another 2 minutes to make coffee and a minute drive to the data center. We spent a few minutes diagnosing the issue firewall to ensure it was indeed the problem before replacing. We are not going to name the vendor it was not Supermicro despite the images we are using because it is a known Intel Atom issue.

At STH, we have an in-line firewall that is designed to cut traffic when it dies. Given we do not sell products or services on STH, a few minutes of downtime is essentially a rounding error for our application so the safer option is to endure a few minutes of downtime during maintenance.

This time, we simply swapped the old unit out for a Xeon D based solution and got everything running. It was faster than bringing everything up in another data center, then migrating everything back to the original infrastructure. The STH hosting cluster is actually smaller in anticipation of updating over the next ten days or so. The dual Intel Xeon E V3 node was offline while the site was still running, but when it came back online and everything was back to being balanced STH page load times went from about 2.

What is next for our environment? CPUs and systems are in. We are preparing for an EPYC upgrade next. Stay tuned. The switch that went down was going to be replaced anyway, so that is getting a significant upgrade next time.

If you buy a retail AMD EPYC series processor, there is an enormous case badge in the package that will not fit a rackmount server bezel. Our failures this week are now in our tracking sheets.

There are certainly things that can be designed better in our infrastructure. We have plenty of bandwidth, colo space, and all of the hardware one could want. That is still a journey. We should not have left the firewall with the AVR54 bug installed.

This was a risk that we took and it bit us. Do you know if the outage was inside the facility? Hour outage? Lots of datacenters do not offer any UPS system. The kind of power one needs in a datacenter would require way too many diesel generators or way too many batteries.
